Commissioner welcomes funding to improve support for people affected by sexual violence and abuse

Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, said:

“I strongly welcome the announcement from the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Trefnydd and Chief Whip that the Welsh Government is investing over £2 million to increase the availability of specialist support and therapeutic services for people affected by sexual violence and abuse.

“This funding will enable specialist organisations to reach out and offer much-needed support to thousands of survivors across Wales, many of whom are older people, something which is hugely important.

“Alongside crucial funding, we also need to see wider action to protect and support older people at risk of or experiencing sexual violence and abuse, something I am driving forward as part of my work programme, in partnership with key public bodies and organisations.

“This includes action to better understand people’s lived experiences, as well as improving age-related data to provide a clearer picture of where further resources and support are needed.

“In addition, it’s crucial that professionals and practitioners have the knowledge they need to recognise potential signs of sexual violence and abuse and connect people with the help they need to keep them safe.

“People affected by sexual violence and abuse can be amongst the most vulnerable within our society and this issue remains amongst the most hidden and difficult for people to disclose. That’s why it’s vital that organisations across Wales continue to work together to improve services and support so that people of all ages are safe, protected and supported.”
