Older People’s Commissioner calls for greater energy bills support for older people

Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, said:

“Reports that energy prices could rise by as much as 25% in January will be causing significant concern amongst thousands of older people across Wales.

“This increase will push greater numbers of older people into hardship and poverty and force households across Wales to cut back even further on heating and other essentials, something we know puts people’s health at significant risk and creates further pressures on public services.

“Given the potential size of the increase in the New Year, the UK Government should consider providing some form of emergency support for energy bills, similar to support provided in previous years, to prevent older people who are struggling financially from reaching crisis point.

“The Welsh Government also has a vital role to play and should explore the mechanisms available to provide additional support to older people, as has been delivered previously, alongside establishing a resilience fund to provide emergency assistance, particularly to those who are struggling but do not qualify for other forms of support.

“Across Wales and the UK, we also need to see initiatives focused on increasing the take up of financial entitlements, which thousands of older people miss out on every year, building on previously successful campaigns.

“The action I am calling for from the UK and Welsh Governments will be vital to help ensure older people have the support they need to stay warm, safe and well throughout the winter months.

“I would also encourage any older person who is struggling financially to check whether they are receiving all of the support they are entitled to, such as Pension Credit.

“Around £200 million went unclaimed in Wales last year, and Pension Credit is worth an average of £4,300 a year to those who claim, which can make a real difference. But it’s also important to remember that even a small award can unlock wider support including help with council tax, housing costs, dental and eye treatment and a free TV licence.”
