Deputy Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Kelly Davies, said:
“I welcome the fact that the Welsh Government has, with one exception, accepted or accepted in principle the Committee’s recommendations. This demonstrates a recognition that the issues highlighted in the Committee’s report, which reflect concerns identified by the Commissioner’s 2014 Care Home Review, must be addressed.
“However, parts of the response lack important detail regarding the specific action that will be taken to address the issues set out within the Committee’s report, and I have some concerns that the Welsh Government has not set out any clear timescales for delivery, despite the Committee being explicit about when they expected change to be delivered.
“I will be writing to the Cabinet Secretary seeking further detail and clarity on a number of the points raised in the Welsh Government’s response, particularly in terms of timescales, and have made clear that meaningful action and change is required to ensure that antipsychotic medication is not being inappropriately prescribed and administered to some of our most vulnerable older people.”
