Deputy Commissioner responds to publication of Professor Gerald Holtham’s report on Paying for Social Care

in News

Deputy Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Kelly Davies, said:

“I welcome the fact that the Welsh Government is exploring possible ways in which the much-needed money to pay for social care could be raised and I welcome Professor Holtham’s report as an important part of this debate.

“Ensuring sustainable funding for social services to provide people with the care and support they may need as they get older is essential and older people will want to see a fair solution that provides them with a high standard of care if and when they require it.

“However, it is important to recognise that the quality and availability of social care services affects people of all ages. Recently published research has demonstrated that social services spending on older people is now lower than the spending on other age groups.

“The Welsh Government should consider looking at the funding arrangements for the social services system as a whole to ensure that any new approach provides a long-term, sustainable solution and delivers the highest standards of care and support to everyone who needs it.”
